What are Meta Tags in WordPress? How to Add Meta Tags?

Meta means information about. Meta tags are the standard way of describing a web page to search engines.  The information shall be your website name, the author name, list of keywords on the webpage etc.

Meta tags can be added to WordPress blogs also. They are not included by default.What are Meta Tags?

You can add meta tags to the header.php template file manually or automatically using plugins. If you want to add specific meta tags there are two options:

  • Why do you need Meta Tags?
    • In simple words, meta tags are the way to describe a page to the search engines.
    • Search engines can understand the web page using meta tags.
  • Option #1 – Manually adding Meta Tags.
    • Use generic meta tags such as keyword or description and within that include words that will give a reference to the content on the blog.
      • Few meta tag examples are:
        • <meta name=”description” content=”description about the page” />
        • <meta name=”keywords” content=”keyword1, keyword2″ />
        • <meta name=”author” content=”your name” />
    • You can edit the header.php file and add the above lines to the top in order to show meta tag in your pages.
    • However, meta tags have to be dynamic depending on the current blog post/page.
  • Option #2 – Automatically adding Meta Tags using plugins.
    • There are many plugins available that allow you to set keywords, descriptions etc. automatically without touching any source code.
    • Few plugins are Yoast, All-in-one-seo etc.
    • Once you install this plugin, you can configure it to automatically add meta tags dynamically on the blog posts, pages.
